Columbus High’s Esports Club is for students to experience competitive and casual video game play among their school peers. The Esports Club has existed for four years and is open to all students, regardless of grade level.
“Esports club is just a place for people who like to play video games to come together,” Club leader, Coach Torres, says.
During the fall, the Esports Club meets every Friday in room 305. Meetings are held at 3:30 p.m. and are usually an hour and a half long. In the spring, meetings are not weekly and the schedule is apt to change due to Torres’ soccer coaching duties.
The Esports Club does not require dedicated attendance from a student, nor are there restrictions on what games to play as long as they are school appropriate.
“[Students] can connect with each other through the games they already play, or through new games,” Torres explained.
The club has had over thirty participants, with around ten consistent members. Students in the Esports Club can play casually, but also create their own unique mini-tournaments to challenge each other.
For students interested in a more competitive route, the Columbus High Esports Team will start their 2022 season this Fall.
The Esports Team competes officially under the GHSA (Georgia High School Association) and holds tournaments against other Georgia high schools with a chance of winning the State Champion title.
Esports tournaments consist of weekly matches that last around two hours. Each video game has a specific weekday scheduled for the matches.
Columbus High’s Esports Team currently has teams that specialize in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, FIFA, Madden NFL, League of Legends, and Rocket League. Depending on the game, there can be anywhere from one to six players per team.
All things considered, the Esports Club offers a fresh opportunity for beginner and experienced players to compete with and against their schoolmates. Any student wanting to participate in the Esports Club or the CHS Esports Team can speak with Coach Torres in room 305.
