On Tuesday, March 4, our Blue Devils boys soccer team played against the St. Anne-Pacelli Vikings. Pacelli has been one of Columbus’ long-standing rivals, and there was definitely lots of buildup to the game. Our Blue Devils have beaten the Vikings for 3 consecutive years, and this season’s win made that number four, with a final score of 3-2.
The game was very close throughout and definitely heated, especially with Pacelli scoring a goal within the first thirty seconds after kickoff. However, Columbus’ Ryan Collins was able to respond with a goal in the final stretch of the first half, tying the game up.
The second half of the game was a very close back and forth, with Columbus taking the lead with another goal scored by Sammy Hendrix, and then Pacelli responding with a penalty kick to tie the game back up to 2-2. The game continued to go back and forth, until Blue Devil Roberto Diaz scored the game-winning goal, making the score 3-2. Our Blue Devils were able to defend against another Pacelli goal for the remainder of the game and were able to come out with a win over one of their biggest rivals.
Goalie Gabe Perez (10) comments, “Beating Pacelli was awesome because they’ve been our long-term rival,” while also remarking, “I feel like we played our hearts out and had a good comeback.”
Right winger Titus Robbins (10) recalls the night, saying, “We were down at first, but the team came together, had that chemistry, got some goals on the board, and just ended the night with some happiness.” Robbins also comments, “It was fun, and we were able to come together as a team to complete an overall goal of keeping the rivalry alive between us [Columbus and Pacelli].”
