Columbus honored its three seniors Tuesday evening: Dasha Hayes, Ashley Sajous, and Alexis Steinhauser.
The girls have led the Blue Devils to region titles in each of their four years with the program. They clinched their most recent one last week with a 2-1 victory against LaGrange.
Ashley Sajous reflects on these titles and the hard work that went into them, “We maintained consistency by constantly practicing every single day… Although it got very tiring having to go to practice everyday, we knew that it would benefit us in some way and being region champs for so long proved that the work we put in was worth it.”
The seniors scored a combined 6 goals in the shutout victory, with Alexis Steinhauser scoring a career-high 4 goals.
“It was.. Definitely one of the highs of my season!” expresses Steinhauser, “Being able to put on such a performance in front of all my friends and family was such a good feeling.”
Senior night is an emotional night for any team, and that can sometimes hinder the on-field performance. This certainly was not the case for the Blue Devils, as they crushed Jordan 10-0.
“I try to remind the players that even though we’ve recognized our seniors, the season isn’t over,” reveals Coach Lovin, “We’ve got the most important stretch coming up with the playoffs. I tell them that we’ll fully celebrate when the season is over.”
Columbus wrapped up the regular season Thursday night with yet another 10-0 victory against Kendrick. They are currently riding a 5-game win streak going into playoffs, with four of these games being 10-0 shutout victories.
“As a team we will build off the momentum we have from the last games, but we know we also have more work to do,” emphasizes Steinhauser, “We will need to build off of this and continue to work hard in practice and know that every game could be our last.”
The Blue Devils hope to build off of this momentum going into playoffs, which begins on April 14.
“It’s been a good season of growth and development,” explains Lovin, “I’m excited about the playoffs and the potential of our team going forward.”
