New Teacher Spotlight: Get to Know Ms. Short

By: Mason Elmore

Columbus High School welcomes Ms. Rachel Short as the new Art teacher. She will also be taking up the role of advisor to the Art Club, as well as the sponsor of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) starting the 2024-2025 school year.

She went to school at Columbus’ own Columbus State University. There she received a Bachelor in the Arts. While there, she did a study abroad in Italy to learn about its art and architecture. After college, she earned her certification to be a teacher.

Ms. Short has been impressed with CHS. “[Columbus has] been very supportive and welcoming so far. The students all so engaged with school," she said.

When asked about being in charge of Art Club and NAHS, she said “I hope to have them do several projects for both the school and community. And of course have plenty of fun while doing art.”

Art student Natalia Jurado (12) stated“I like Ms. Short’s class because I get to do a lot of artwork, and it's how I get to express myself… [Ms. Short has] sort of helped guide me towards what I want to investigate throughout the year.”

Outside of school, Ms. Short spends her time going to concerts, hiking trails, attending local festivals, rescuing animals, and watching Freaks and Geeks. When asked what her favorite food is she answered with no hesitation “mashed potatoes!”.
