This past Saturday the Columbus men's golf team traveled to Sharpsburg, Georgia, where they placed sixth at the GSGA Boys Invitational.
Columbus sent six golfers to the tournament, which consisted of twelve different schools from across the state.
The Blue Devils came out of the weekend in 6th place, combining for a total score of 330 in Saturday’s tournament.
Freshman Lucas Patel was the team’s best performer. He put up a score of 81 in his first varsity tournament.
Patel comments on some of the challenges that come with competing at such a high level in his freshman year, “I do not hit the ball as far so that has been my only concern, however my short game has allowed me to overcome that and shoot good scores.”
Patel is not the only young golfer on the team. He is one of three freshmen on a varsity squad that consists of only underclassmen.
“We have three 14 year olds and three 15 year olds on varsity,” explains Coach Parker.
This is the youngest boys team that Parker has coached in his tenure at Columbus. They are going up against tough competition this year, but they hope to continue their historic streak of 15 consecutive years finishing top 5 in the state.
The Blue Devils will travel to Moultrie, Georgia on April 2 to compete in the Packer Invite.
