Saved by the Ball: CHS Varsity Basketball Team Takes the Win Tuesday Night

Columbus High Varsity Basketball took the win this Tuesday against Brookstone with the winning point being made by Jonathan Powell in the last three seconds of the game.

Tuesday Night the Columbus High student body filed into the gym dressed as frat boys to support the CHS basketball team.

According to many of the players on the team, the student body coming to support was the main reason the team was able to win the game that night.

“I love the energy that they brought and as a player, that is who we play the game for,” remarked Charles Stone.

In the first quarter, CHS kept the lead, with a score of 17-3. During the third quarter, Brookstone made a comeback eventually taking the lead in the last half of the game.

Brookstone competed really well, but as a team, the CHS varsity boys knew they had to compete with the same ambition to win as Brookstone did and adjust in order to take the victory.

“ We knew the style that they played and that they would compete [well], so we just had to prepare for a physical battle the night before [the] game,” said Stone.

During the second half, the boys switched through the plays depending on how the competition was playing and had to bring more energy to the court.

CHS was down by one point in the fourth quarter with three seconds left on the clock when Jonathan Powell got fouled and made the last two free throws allowing CHS to take the win, 49-48.

However, this success did not come without the team's hard work this season. The boys practice every day of the week except Saturdays.

"I feel accomplished," explained Oakley Koontz, "but now we still have stuff to work on and a season to play."
