The human brain is an intricate network of connections, and a student at Columbus High has worked to spread this knowledge to all grade levels by founding the Neuroscience Club at CHS. By exploring how the brain processes illusions, how neurons fire, and simple tricks to manipulate perception, this club aims to foster a love for the biology of the brain.

Mac Dickinson (11) founded this club because of his ever-growing passion for neuroscience.

“I recently discovered my love for neuroscience and wanted to spread that knowledge in a fun and engaging way!” Dickinson exclaimed.

The club’s primary goal is to introduce students to the fascinating study of the brain while creating engaging and interactive meetings for a hands-on approach. The club meets monthly to discuss in-depth neuroscience-related topics and reinforce this knowledge through activities. Unlike other science clubs at the school, the Neuroscience Club specifically focuses on brain functions and finds methods to apply them to the real world.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 25. At this meeting, students will be able to build a neuron from candy while learning about the different parts and functions of one. More than this, they will learn the implications of each part of the neuron on the rest of the brain. The ultimate goal is to make these concepts tangible, easy to learn, and fun.

Other activities they look forward to doing include the rubber band hand illusion, an experiment that tricks a person’s mind into believing that a fake rubber hand is their own.

“It is a crazy feeling when your brain gets fooled into thinking the rubber hand is real. We hope to show how perception can easily be manipulated,” Dickinson states.

The club is continually hoping to expand its reach by encouraging more students to explore neuroscience. They are welcoming all students from those hoping to pursue careers in a related field, or if one simply years to learn how the brain works.

“We want to create an environment where people can excitingly explore neuroscience,” Dickinson highlights. The Neuroscience Club is continuing to grow and they happily invite all students to attend a meeting to learn about illusions in the brain and gain insight into newfound knowledge. Don’t miss out on the upcoming meeting on Tuesday, February 25!
